Photography Tips for Girl and Guy Seniors

Tips for Everyone

Clothing

First of all avoid stripes and plaid! Solids photograph much better! Avoid clothing with large, bold brand names or that has wording on it except for your own school logo. No need to look like your advertising for a clothing brand. Also bring a variety of color and style; all blue tank tops can get boring. Remember, it is best to do one or two outfits that mom will like, and then we can do the stuff YOU like. That being said I want you to be You and want you to bring and wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Some shots are full length and others are close up. Plan outfits from head to toe, in other words don’t forget nice shoes if you are wearing a nice outfit.

Most of the time you will have to change in the car or layer so you can add or drop a piece for a different look.

Clothing Styles

Make sure your clothing flatters you.

If you think you have large arms, be careful of sleeveless styles, they can make your arms look fuller.

Darker colors and long sleeves always photograph the best.

Clothes for black and white

Black and white photographs look best with black clothing. The contrast between the skin and black is what makes them so dramatic. So bring some black clothes.

Hair

Avoid changing your hairstyle or cutting or bleaching your hair right before your session. Let it be natural. Quick easy hairstyle changes during your session are OK. Bring your hair care tools and products with you if need be. Although the photographer tries to help with hair, it is hard to know what your hair “is supposed to look like”. So make sure you like the look or let the photographer know your preferences.

Props

Bring Them! Bring props that help define who you are. Some popular choices are: sports equipment, sports uniforms, music instruments, four wheelers, prom dresses, letter jacket, football  jersey, car , pet, cowboy hat, boyfriend/girlfriend…

Or anything else that you want to include in your portrait to make it more unique and special!

Complexion

I will retouch blemishes, tattoos that you don’t want shown, scars, etc. when asked. The proofs you receive will not be retouched so look at them closely so you can let me know of any changes you want done to your prints.

Weather

Let’s face it; we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. If it rains, we simply have to reschedule. Don’t worry about clouds, but rain is a problem. Please call me, if I haven’t called you first, if the weather is questionable.

Glasses

Most glasses glare! Some prescriptions more than others. Your best bet is to not wear them in the photo or get a “loaner” set of frames from your optometrist that look similar to yours.

Special Concerns For Girls

Jewelry

Best tip here, keep it simple. We want the attention on YOU, not the big shiny jewelry.

Special Considerations for Guys

Shaving

Please make sure you are clean shaven. Got a goatee that mom hates, do your casual shots first and bring a razor to shave it off for mom’s shots. Everyone is happy that way.
